Jean Peyral, the hero, is sent to Saint-Louis of Senegal, where he met a negro girl, Fatou-Gaye. He is ordered on an expedition in the Galam country against a mutinous chief ; an ambush is laid for the French troops, and Jean Peyral is killed. The description of his death is terribly graphic and forcible; Fatou-Gaye finds his corpse, strangle their child by the side of his body, and then takes poison. The black Venus has triumphed. This excellent translation of the Love-Story of a Spahi here presented is illustrated by the Pierre Loti’s drawings and magnificent paintings by Ch. Fouqueray and G. Rochegrosse.
